Elgin’s reactor product range includes neutral grounding reactors, current limiting reactors, and custom oil-filled shunt reactors. Elgin designs, manufactures, and tests reactors out of its 100,000 square-foot manufacturing facility located in West Virginia.
Current limiting reactors are incorporated to limit short-circuit current to an appropriate level in line with the overall system. Neutral grounding reactors are typically connected between the ground and neutral of transformers in order to manage line-to-ground faults at a desired level. Elgin’s neutral grounding 600V –34.5kV reactors are utilized in the renewable, utility and various industries.
Shunt reactors are incorporated to negate capacitive power built up by long and lightly loaded underground powerlines, which will result in increased active power and prevent overvoltages. Elgin Power Solutions manufactures oil-filled shunt reactors up to 15 MVAR and up to 35kV.
Oil-filled shunt reactors are often used in lieu of air core shunt reactors. Oil filled shunt reactors significantly reduce physical size footprint and can lower total installed cost. Elgin manufactures a specialty air core current limiting “pancake reactor”, which is specifically designed for capacitor banks. Our pancake reactor is rated 40 UH, 160A. The pancake reactor is compact and lightweight. The epoxy encapsulated reactor is perfect for outdoor capacitor bank applications. They are easily installed directly on the vacuum switches, busswork or insulators.
The pancake reactor mitigates inrush and fault damage while reducing arc flash exposure. The standard pancake reactor can be used in 600V –34.5kV applications.
